Great Alternatives to Barbed Wire Fencing
Jun 30th, 2009 by Riche Goldmann

Barbed wire (or barb wire) fencing has long been one of the common materials used to protect property boundaries and contain animals. This type of fencing is made from twisted strands of wire that has razor sharp burrs lining the surface. These barbed protrusions have proven to be useful at deterring cattle and livestock from challenging the fence.

Barbed wire fencing is extremely successful because of those little barbs that, when touched, pierce the skin and snag it, which can cause quite a bit of pain for an animal. This in turn keeps the animal from charging further into the fence; moreover, it doesn’t take much for the animal to learn its lesson and to never do it again. This way animals learn to stay inside of the fence. Intruders never cross it because they can see the barb from far away.

The danger level of each barbed wire fence depends a lot on the way that the fence is constructed. The strands of wire lining the top of the fence can have barbs that are further apart or closer together. The closer together they are, obviously, the harder the fence is to cross, and so the more effective it will be and vice versa. They can also incorporate more than one strand of wire to make the barrier even more effective.

In addition to causing pain and injury to animals, a barb wire fence can do the same to humans who inadvertently come in contact with it. Even repairing and maintenance can be dangerous and time consuming. There are many people who feel that the benefits of barb wire fencing are offset by these problems.

However, barbed wire fences are not the only answer or solution to protecting your livestock and property. There are a number of other available alternatives. Most of these alternatives are much more humane to animals, while still keeping them contained and keeping your property effectively protected. Electric, steep, or woven wire fences are just some of the options now on the market that can better protect your animals and your property.

There are some very high quality woven wire fences that are now available. Many of these are made from high tensile wire and they will last longer and look better than some of the wire fencing that you may be more familiar with. Animals are easy to contain within these fence borders and they are not harmed if they make contact with the wire. These can be used as temporary or permanent fences in any kind of location.

If you are into high technology, then you may be interested in getting an electric fence. These fences offer a great alternative to barbed wire and are equally as effective, except that they are more humane to animals and not as dangerous to humans. They send a low level jolt of electricity to anything that crosses the fence, which is enough to keep animals contained and intruders off your property. They even come in solar powered models.

Generally used for smaller fencing projects, steel fences are another great alternative to barbed wire fences. They are very durable and safe, but also do the job of keeping out intruders and keeping animals in. They can be used for larger projects, are undeniably strong and can last for years when properly installed and maintained.

How To Hire An Interior Designer For Your Decorating Needs
Jun 30th, 2009 by Janice Nickole

Over the years many people have asked me what is important to consider when you hire an Interior Designer. I hope that after reading my article below you will get the help you were looking for.

See to it that you use the 5 questions presented in this article to help you make an informed decision.

– Do you feel you lack the skills for home decorating?

– Have you made home purchases but they are still in the closet or garage because you don’t know what to do with them or where to put anything?

– Is your day just too busy and you can’t find the time to even think about decorating or designing?

– Do you and your spouse or roommate disagree on design styles when it comes to home or apartment decorating?

– Are you unsure of your personal style and exactly what you like when it comes to home decorating?

If you’ve answered yes to any of the questions you read about in this article, then you may want to think about hiring an Interior Designer. Believe me, it’ll be one of the best decisions you can make. They can help you immensely.

Interior Designers are skilled at designing interior spaces and space planning. They also have the expertise on form and function, balance and harmony, color concepts, lighting design, furniture selection and more. Why should you hire an Interior Designer? Simply because you may lack the necessary skills of design and secondly, mistakes will cost you money!

Now I’m not saying that all Interior Designers are alike on the contrary. If you ask five Designers about how a room should be designed, you will get five different answers!

Many people have a natural talent for interior design. The difference in using the services of a Designer extends far beyond natural abilities. Sometimes there are architectural specifications that must be met in order to complete a project. At other times, there are elements that only an experienced Designer can perceive and bring into the project.

A good characteristic to look for in a Designer is confidence in his or her abilities. Also a Designer should respect YOU as a Client and listen to your desires and needs for your design project.

Meet with your Designer before hiring them. Many will advertise their services on personal websites. Most Designers offer free consultations, which is an informal meeting to break the ice and get to know your Designer. Your Designer will use this meeting to get to know you as well and hear what you desire in your interior spaces.

State clearly your likes and dislikes, your ideas and your desires to your Designer so that he or she can design exactly what you want. Even if you are unsure about your personal design style, an Interior Designer’s expertise will know how to put it all together for you.

It is not so important as to how long the Designer has been in practice, rather that he or she is on the “same page” as you.

Ultimately the goal of the Designer is to keep the client on track. But the connection or “synergy” must exist between Client and Designer and so personalities must work well together.

Interior Designers will bring together special vendors to the table to help get your interior project done. They are invaluable because they know who to go to and most importantly who not to go to. This in-depth knowledge is exactly what the Client needs. Most consumers are not privy to this information and may end up hiring the wrong team of people.

Referrals may or may not be given by your Designer simply because past Clients are not willing to give out private information about them. General questions may be acceptable like what kind of projects were completed and was the client satisfied with the results.

Most Designers charge by the hour and work with many budget levels so don’t think you can’t afford one. You’ll see a range of prices from $50 dollars an hour to $300 dollars and hour or more. But don’t assume that because the Designer is charging the higher end would make them any more qualified or better.

June - Garden Month With Lights
Jun 30th, 2009 by Kent Higgins

Spring Flowering Bulbs

The last of the late flowering bulbs made their exit in May. Many inexperienced gardeners remove the yellowing or unsightly foliage. The bulbs from which these plants grow are specialized organs that store the food manufactured by the leaves. If the foliage is removed this important function is lost. Not only is this food important to next years flower production, but without it the exhausted bulb cannot produce new bulbs through division.

Foliage should be left on the plants until it dries up of its own accord. Even after flowers are through, watering is essential if the bulbs are to cure properly.

Plant Labels

In this day of plant specialization the identification of plants is very important. There are many different kinds of labels available. The label should be as permanent as possible and be lettered lightly. The method of attachment should be such that there can be no mistake as to what plant is meant. Information other than just names may be put on the labels. For instance in labeling roses it would be wise to indicate the color class (dark red, red blend, etc.). This helps immeasurably when hurriedly cutting for a show as it will save a great deal of time getting the specimens entered. If you visit other gardens to observe new varieties being tested, the labels will prove invaluable. In this gardening world today practically no one is interested in plants unless they know the name of the variety. There is no time like the present to begin labeling the plants in your garden.

Summer Bulbs

June is the last call for many summer bulbs such as canna, caladium, tigridias, nerine lilies, and gladiolus. If these can be obtained as potted or pre-started plants, particularly canna and caladium, the chances for success are better. These plants actually are all semi-tropical and grow better after the soil and air are evenly warm. Continue to plant dahlias for a source of late color in the garden. It is still possible to get dahlia flowers from seeds started this month. Many gardeners prefer the new hybrids because their smaller size makes them much more in scale for indoor use.

Insects Control

The bag worms will make their annual bid for the garden in June. These pests devour the foliage from many plants and trees, mostly conifers, and especially arbor-vitae. The control is Sevin or natural neem oil in spray form with soap or a sticker to make it adhere to the plant. Bagworms appear as small black worms (caterpillars) carrying a webby pouch with them. As they mature the bag is fastened to a twig and the life cycle is completed as the pupa inside this bag. Another pest appearing now is the lace wing bug, especially on pyracantha. They are rather small winged bugs with a very decorative wing pattern. As they are sucking insects, a contact insecticide is required. Malathion will do the trick on them.

Garden Lights

June is the first month when evenings are warm enough to enjoy the garden landscape at night. Check into installing solar landscape lights to dramatize your garden. In lighting, select only certain areas to light completely and subdue other areas with partial lighting. If permanent lights are not possible there are many styles of portable lights that can be used. Do not overlook the value of these for working in the garden in late evening.

Solar Christmas Lights for Bright and Low-Cost Christmas Holidays
Jun 30th, 2009 by John Monsholi

Solar Christmas lights are one of the most popular Christmas decorations nowadays, due to their cost efficiency and attractiveness. These types of lights will allow the homeowner to save up to 100 W per each string of Christmas lights. Solar Christmas lights add magic to any Christmas, since they do not have to be turned on or off. The lights will automatically turn on with the onset of the evening.

One of the advantages of solar Christmas lights is that they eliminate the need of a power outlet. You can decorate any tree in your garden, no matter how far away it is from the house. Decorating your Christmas trees this way is much safer, easier and more cost-effective.

The principle of solar Christmas lights is a little solar panel with solar cells, capable of collecting solar energy and transferring it into regular electricity. Tiny solar panels can be placed anywhere, such as on the ground or on a tree branch. Four solar cells will allow the unit to completely recharge on a bright and sunny day.

When looking for solar Christmas lights, it is better to opt for the lights equipped with special polycrystalline solar cells, which allow the lights to emit bright light for hours even after being charged for merely a few hours on a rainy, snowy or an overcast day.

It is actually quite simple to calculate how much sun you need for your lights to stay on throughout the whole evening and the night. Each hour of sunshine will allow the lights to shine for an hour in the evening.

Solar Christmas lights come in different colors and shapes. The most usual colors include red, yellow, green and blue, while the most common shapes include oval, round and teardrop shapes. The type of the light emitted can also be chosen to your preference, starting from a bright light, and to dim soft light.

Many gardeners keep their solar Christmas lights in their gardens even after the Christmas holidays are over. For example, if you have an arch in your garden, you can decorate it with these lights, adding to your garden’s ambiance. You can also make use of these lights for birthdays, anniversaries, porch lighting, and pathway lighting.

Not everybody lives in an area with constant sunshine. It is better to opt for the solar Christmas lights, which are operated with a rechargeable AA size battery. If the day was rainy or snowy, the homeowners can recharge the battery themselves with a regular battery charger.

You can have as many strings of solar Christmas lights as you want on the trees, and you will never have to worry about running the cords across your yard, never have to worry about turning the lights on and off, and most important, you will never have to worry about paying hundreds of dollars for electricity!

It might be a good idea to watch your yard for at least two or three days before placing your solar lights. The most important thing to note is that the area, where you want to place your solar Christmas lights, does not get a shadow cast. Another important thing to remember is that solar Christmas lights operate best when their solar panel is in direct sun throughout the day.

Finding the Perfect Dark Sky Fixtures For Your Home
Jun 30th, 2009 by Cindy Sherman

If you want to minimize any secondary illumination from your outdoor light fixtures and only send the light where it is needed, you should take a look at Dark Sky compliant light fixtures. These fixtures are perfect for saving energy as well as reducing the annoying extraneous glare. The wildlife in the area will love the decrease in light pollution and light clutter. You will enjoy a considerably lower utility bill month after month.

If you have seen how important Dark Sky light fixtures are to your home then you are probably ready to start retrofitting your space with these eco-friendly, energy saving light fixtures. We would be happy to help and are available to answer any questions your make have.

The best way to insure that you are installing Dark Sky compliant is to watch for the stamp of approval that is issued by the IDA (International Dark-Sky Association) on any products that your are considering. If you are unable to find fixtures that are approved by the IDA, look for the key features that are built into fixtures that are friendly to the night sky. Look for fixtures with these features:

1. Fixtures that are made with side and top covers that are solid and opaque. This feature insures that the light is not sent sideways or skyward.

2.Some Dark Sky fixtures use a reflector located in the inside top of the casing that reflects light downward.

3. Choosing fixtures with flat lenses instead of rounded lenses will greatly reduce the glare and any light spillage.

If you currently have outdoor lighting that you are pleased with, you may not be too excited about replacing every single fixture that is on the exterior of your house. If this is the case you could retrofit using light shields. Light shields are cylindrical shaped enclosures that cover both the top and the sides of your existing fixture to reduce up-lighting. Since they are available in a wide array of colors and shapes it is pretty simple to match your fixtures to create a perfectly seamless look.

By taking advantage of the features of Dark Sky lighting you will be able to save money on your utility bills. Any time you save energy, you will save money. It has been reported that the nation wastes around $1.5 billion in light energy each and every year. There are huge amounts of light being sent upwards where it is absolutely useless.

The city of San Diego recently had all of their outdoor lighting fixtures retrofitted to full cut-off lighting. It took the city just three years to make back the mmoney they spent on the modifications. Now they are enjoying the benefits and saving over $3 million annually on the cost of energy.

So, instead of scattering your yard with loads of lighting fixtures, you can cut back on the number you need throughout the space. And more than likely, because of the ability of these fixtures to focus your lighting downward, you’ll need smaller bulbs, too. All of this adds up to lower energy bills and savings in your pocket that increase every year, especially as energy prices rise with each passing month.

Repairing A Leaky Tap
Jun 29th, 2009 by Scott Rodgers

Reading books is my hobby and I read all kinds of books. I have read many books on plumbing, mainly to get some general tips on how to handle common plumbing issues at home without calling a plumber.

One of the most common plumbing issue that we come across at home are the leaking taps. But, with a little time, patience and correct tools, it is possible for anyone to repair it without calling a plumber.

It is always advisable to take prompt actions when it comes to any plumbing issues. If left for a longer time, a leaking tap can leave stains on the sink/baths or can damage the tap entirely. Above all it leads to huge water wastage.

Usually the washer of the leaking tap need to be replaced. But, it can also be caused by a damaged valve seating. If the drip is from a mixer nozzle, then change both tap washers.

If you notice a tap leaking at the faucet, then the most probable reason is a worn out or a damaged washer. You just need to replace the washer with a new one which is easily available in any plumbing supplies store.

For replacing the washer, you first need to turn off the main cork. Next, you should take a spanner and uncork the top of the tap. If you have finished removing it, remove the damaged or the broken washer and replace it with a new one. The replacement you will be using should be durable and with high quality. Now you can cover it again and you should tighten it with a spanner so that it will not leak again.

One should be very careful while using the plumbing equipments and should make sure that it does not damage the tap. So, it is a good idea to wrap the jaws of the wrench with plastic tape, or place a rag around the tap and use the wrench over the top. You can also place a towel into the bowl of the sink, to ensure any small objects do not manage to escape.

There are a variety of taps available in the market. One should check for the quality of the taps before buying. Also, check that the taps you are considering will fit the layout of holes in the basin for which they are intended. Chromium-plated brass taps are the most durable.

Low Voltage Outdoor Lighting - One of the Most Safeguard Low Cost Landscape Lighting Options
Jun 29th, 2009 by John Monsholi

Low voltage outdoor lighting represents a safe and cost-efficient lighting solution. It is quite easy to assemble and install your own low voltage outdoor lighting system, without having to use the services of a professional electrician.

Low voltage outdoor lighting runs on a 12-volt current, which is achieved with the aid of a transformer, rendering the dangerous 110/120-volt current to a relatively safe 12-volt current. The electricity is transmitted through a special weather-resistant low voltage cable, which begins and ends at the transformer (creating a looped run).

Low voltage outdoor lighting has several important advantages, the main ones being:

1. A homeowner can set up his/her own low voltage outdoor lighting system hassle free, with the use of a special kit. Such kit usually includes all of the needed components, such as the cable, a transformer and the fixtures. The only needed component that is not included in the kit is the bulbs. However, it would not be prudent to include the bulbs in the kits, since every bulb may have a different wattage.

2. Low voltage outdoor lighting is very cost-efficient. Such lighting may use bulbs with as little as 4 watts. Most kits come with low watt bright halogen lamps. However, low voltage fluorescent lamps are also available, which are yet more energy efficient.

3. Some kits also come with special timers, which allow the homeowner to set his/her low voltage outdoor lighting system to go on and off each 4, 6 or 8 hours.

4. Low voltage outdoor lighting setups provide the homeowners with a maximum security, since they can easily indicate intruders after the sun goes down.

5. It is extremely easy to relocate your low voltage outdoor lighting system since its wires have to be just slightly immersed under the ground, instead of being buried deeply and permanently.

6. A transformer for low voltage outdoor lighting can range anywhere from 150 W and up to 900 W. It would probably be a good idea to purchase a transformer with a little more muscle, so that you can expand your lighting system if you decide to start using the bulbs with more watts.

7. You can pick the low voltage cable depending on the amount of watts required to operate your low voltage outdoor lighting system. Popular sizes of the low voltage cables include 12 ga. (can carry 300 watts), 14 ga. (can carry 200 watts) and 16 ga. (can carry 150 watts). Standard wire size is 12 gauge.

8. Low voltage outdoor lighting designs can be built to suit a wide range of lighting situations. The types of lighting include path lighting, in-ground fixtures, tree-hung moonlighting fixtures, spotlights, and deck lighting for an extra measure of safety while walking on the steps etc.

9. The most affordable low voltage outdoor lighting systems may cost as little as $15. However, better quality systems may cost up to $300.

10. Simple mathematical calculations will help you estimate how many light bulbs you can use in your system, as well as what will be the average wattage of each bulb. Simply multiply the number of the bulbs in your system by their wattage, and you will find out what the wattage of the transformer is that you need for your lighting system.

It is important to consider several things before starting to set up your low voltage outdoor lighting:

1. Make sure not to use an extension cord for the transformer. Instead plug it directly in the outlet.

2. The wires of the low voltage outdoor lighting system are more prone to damages if they’re not buried deeply in the ground.

3. Even though your transformer is better to have some extra wattage, it should not exceed one third of the total wattage of your system.

Low voltage outdoor lighting is easy to implement, low cost and a safe way to light up your landscaping. Low voltage outdoor lighting will make any garden safer, and extend the life of the garden into the night.

The Art Of Pen Kit Plating - Woodworking Plans
Jun 29th, 2009 by Ryan Henders

There are all kinds of pen making kits out there and they all have different metal platings, such as gold plating, as well as 24K upgrade titanium gold plating, Swiss Rose 18K gold plating, then there are chrome, platinum and black titanium platings . There is a lot of information available on the different kinds of plating options open to you when you decide to get a pen kit.

Gold plating is the usual finish for a pen however; silver has become more and more popular lately. Gold plating looks good, but it isn?t durable when it gets a lot of abrasion, but it can be made stronger with the plating method used or through additives to the gold and/or other techniques that can be found on the net.

24k gold upgrade plating means that the rack method is used and a little bit of cobalt or palladium are mixed in with the chemicals used for plating. . With the rack method, there is literally a rack that looks like a tree with parts that are separated then individually plated. This is done to enhance the strength of the gold plating. In what we have listed here, the softest is Gold plating and it is very susceptible to the effects of abrasion. With titanium gold plating, you get a more durable gold plating.

The process is called PVD, for particle vapor deposition. Here the titanium nitride is color matched TO the gold and is molecularly bonded, or splattered on the piece to get a more exact color match. After this, the parts are re-plated, resulting in parts that seem to show any evidence of wearing. A pen plating kit of this type is not something the bulk commodity kit suppliers would use.

18Karat Swiss Rose gold plating is very rare. It consists of copper and gold that will result in a plating as a result of equally mixed atoms. This plating is done on a solid layer that is very thick. with the parts being specially treated before the process begins. This produces an incredibly lustrous, but very durable finish, and, used carefully, it should last for many years.

One of the most popular platings is, of course, chromium plating. One finish that is very durable and long lasting is Chrome when used normally. It is extremely popular because the look of chromium is dazzling while, at the same time very affordable, which is why these are used. There is no doubt the popularity of Pen plating kits has grown over the years. When using a platinum plating kit, be warned that the cheaper kits use rhodium.

The ones that use real platinum produce rugged and hard finish, and, under normal usage, it should endure for many years. The next finish is black titanium, this process uses PVD, which is oxide molecularly bonded, making incredibly durable and hard plating. This unique finish adds an elegance that is matched only by its toughness that will be of value in the coming years

Handy Tips For Lighting Charcoal
Jun 29th, 2009 by Author Downs

The following article presents the very latest information on lighting charcoal. If you have a particular interest in lighting charcoal, then this informative article provides you some information.

Instant charcoal lighting is specially created and impregnated with various substances to make lighting easier. For purists, this detracts from it’s appeal. These come complete with instant lighting charcoal in a foil tray with a grill, ready to use. Gas barbeques and self lighting charcoal, they are just lazy, particularly gas barbeques. A barbeque has a dry heat, cooking over gas gives a different flavour as it is a wet heat from the water in the smoke.

Quick lights are simpe, easy lighting charcoal. Most of them start right up within seconds of being in contact with a flame. One of the studies has cited that self-lighting charcoal may be a major hazard for hookah smokers because it generates more carbon monoxide and other dangerous substances than natural charcoal. For those individuals who cannot avoid smoking a hookah, they should discontinue using dangerous self-lighting charcoal.

It’s called a chimney, and makes lighting charcoal a breeze. Self-lighting charcoal is easy to light and safe to use. The other thing to keep in mind when lighting charcoal is that you need to have patience. People tend to want to keep dumping lighter fluid on just because they don’t see flames or the flames they had have disappeared.

You can see that there’s practical value in learning more about lighting charcoal. Can you think of ways to apply what’s been covered so far?

I have done a bbq for thirty to forty people in the past and this went on for about three hours. I simply lit two bags of instant light and added more charcoal roughly every twenty minutes and the bbq was as good to cook on at the end as it was at the beginning. Use BBQ grills, patio heaters and outdoor lighting to create the perfect outdoor kitchen environment.

There should be sufficient space between the two ‘T’ handles of the shovels to suspend one of the large plastic bags. Fold the top of the bags over twice approx. Each pack contains specially treated charcoal packed into 1kg bags. Since the product is bagged within a bag there is no dust leakage. Kingsford Match Light is ready to go straight out of the bag. You just light it and in no time at all it is ready and you can get your stuff on the grill.

Barbeques are great for family meals and parties, and Morrisons has some fantastic value outdoor cooking equipment and accessories to get your summer sizzling.
