Home is where the heart is. It is a sanctuary for those who has ever dwell within it. Each crack on ceilings and stained on the walls tells a different story of their own. Each year, millions of youths will bid goodbye to their parents and embark on their journey. Either it is for work or college, they will leave their nests and settle in foreign environment. 80% of them would call home almost daily and is homesick. Sooner or later, they will outgrow this phrase and starts to enjoy their new atmosphere. However, whenever trouble starts stirring up, there will always be this longing to be back in their room, surrounded by people who loved him.
As for the parents, there is a bitter sweet side to it. Most parents would suffer from empty nest syndrome. It is basically a feeling of loneliness that is very normal. Some of the parents would just realise that this is a phase while some may worsen to the extreme of becoming depressed. This is highly susceptible to those who have a strong maternal or paternal bond with their children, making it hard for them to get over it. Apart from this, families who don’t have any sibilings left may also heighten this sense of loneliness. Single parents are those who suffer the most. Nevertheless, some parents have been looking forward for their young to leave home. These are the group of people that enjoys total freedom from being enslaved by their teenagers. No more hogging the cars and the food supply does not need to be restocked daily. Parents would be allowed to listen to their own choice of music and the house would stay cleaner as there is no longer a horde of teenagers stomping into the newly waxed floor. Moreover, parents would be able to spend quality time with each other without accidental interruptions. For some, life is bliss and empty nest syndrome is a far cry away.
Not everyone might have a very positive mind when their children leave home. For the big majority of us, we will need directions and inspirations in order to get a head start. It would be easier to curb loneliness with engaging oneself with new activities and hobbies. Think of hobbies that you have thought about doing but never had a chance to do because you are so busy with your everyday chores. Now that you no longer have to pick the kids from school, you might want to spend the afternoon doing something you like for instance joining a poetry class. The point is, it is never too late to start be it in education or self-improvement. All this can curb the feeling of loneliness and self-pity.
Possibly you may not be ready to be engaged in something that takes you away from your home. Why don’t you start on making your patio one of the best looking in the neighbourhood? A healthy competition with the neighbour who has been boasting about his flower bed is actually quite beneficial for the mind. The first step to do is to freshen up your lawn. Get flower seeds and nurture them with care and love. Eventually, you will find that they will reward you with vibrant looking flowers and birds will start to visit your garden.
You need furniture to be in your patio not only to beautify your patio but also for your own relaxing pleasure. If you are keen on making your patio look a set from an exotic island or beach then you might want to go for wicker furniture. Wicker is not only strong and durable, it is also lightweight and costs much lesser than most of other type of furniture. Wicker furniture is still as modern as it is today and for more decades to come.
You may however go for patio furniture that can match your exquisite home. For large patio and extra money to indulge, you can choose teak furniture to furnish your patio. Teak is stronger and more stable and is a common material used for building boat decks. It is also sturdy enough t be left in the outdoor and embrace whatever the weather brings even without the care of varnish and oil.
So why do you have to worry when your children are all grown up? When they come back, they’ll be amazed by your transformation and of the house. Perhaps, they may even want to move back in!
If you are thinking about building a pond in your garden then there is a lot to think about, from the way you want your pond to look with the shape and plants and fish, to how big the pond will be and where abouts in your garden will be the best spot for your enjoyment.
But what about all the bits in between, there is decisions to be made on all the extras that can only make for a finished masterpiece. Probably the first big decision is to decide whether you want a regular fish pond or a koi pond.
Now your essentials will be the filter and pump and of course all ponds need these, but if it is a Koi pond then these become very important as the water will want to be crystal clear. So before construction starts on any kind of pond some more essentials to think about are the electric and water supply, these will need to be as close to the pond as possible to make life easier.
The sort of extras that we can add and enjoy are best thought about at the planning stage as most things are easier installed at the outset as the pond gets built, rather than trying to add to the pond later on. This is why careful planning is vital to the successful outcome of the pond.
To add to the look and add some sound to your pond, then what about a fountain, which will also aerate the water for the fish. It is best to give the fountain its own pump so that it can be turned off when not needed, without turning anything else off with it such as the filter pump. You may want to turn it off when you are not there to enjoy it or during the night.
What about the gentle sound of a flowing waterfall, these really can make for a great looking pond. You can enjoy more than one waterfall, depending on the size of your pond. Whether the waterfall is a large or small one the noise can be so relaxing and they are well worth thinking about before construction starts.
After dark you can really add something special to the overall effect of your pond by adding some lights, from different colors to above or below water, you can really create something amazing for when the evenings draw in making your pond come alive after dark.
Another important thing to consider in the planning stages of building a pond is the type of fish you will be getting for your pond. This may determine the way in which your pond is going to be constructed. A pond housing Goldfish may be a different design to one housing Koi, but on your desicion and completion of your pond will come the fun part of picking your very own fish.
From many years water wheel pumps are used not only to drive water but also to generate electricity to slash wood and grind grain. These water wheel pumps are popularly used to supply water in the areas where the availability of the drinking water is not easily available.
Water wheel pumps must be installed in such a way that they can be adjusted to the seasonal changing level of the river, which can be done manually. Before beginning the construction of your project, carefully create the structure that you want for your project. Utilize wood planks or cardboard for this plan.
Take the help of a ruler to draw a straight line on a wood plank. The line must be set apart couple of inches from the border of the wood. Then divide this wood plank in ten parts equally. With the help of protractor encircle a couple of circles. Mark the centre as it will be the axle. It is suggestible the size must be the appropriate with the wheel which you are building. If the water wheel pump is not made with proper proportion, then there will imbalance in the water wheel pump.
The given wood board is sliced into two triangular shapes. A wood beam is added for extra help. To fit the wheel there must be grooves in the stand. The tallness is completely left on you.
If the surface is steady for the flow of water then the water wheel pump can be smoothly functioned. But they can also function without any abrupt descents and waterfalls. First take the wood board where you have marked ten spaces. Then cut the circles and be sure that they are cut perfectly.
Before you continue to build a water wheel pump, you must stick the paddles first. Take the paddles and put them on the wheel. Now put the wood skewer at the center point of the wheels.
The wheels are carted and placed it on the top of the stand. There place the buckets. It is necessary to check that the size of the bucket should go well with the wheel size.
Check if the stand is stable enough to support the wheel. You should carefully use each tools and wear safety gloves to avoid any unnecessary accidents.
Twenty years ago solar powered items were seen as exotic and were extremely expensive. Except for small items such as watches and calculators, solar power was a viable option for only a few large scale, expensive projects. Recently, however, affordable solar panels have made solar power a practical option for powering many common devices. Since their introduction, solar water fountains have become quite popular enhancements to both outdoor gardens and indoor decor.
Solar Water Fountains - The Green Approach to Garden Decor
Obviously, the more electrically powered devices you have, the more electrical power you will use. Most garden fountains place only moderate demands on the power grid. However, that demand is constant as the fountain runs for most of the day. The negative environmental impact of electrical power generation by the burning of fossil fuels has been well documented. The more non-renewable energy that is saved, the less demand there will be for additional power plants. Replacing the power source for non-essential usage with solar power provides a “green” benefit to our environment.
Solar Fountains Reduce Dependence on Commercial Power Sources
When summer weather arrives people begin using additional electrically powered items ranging from outdoor lights to electric coolers. In addition, the wide-spread use of air conditioning creates a significant drain on the power grid. If you’ve ever experienced a “brown out” on a sweltering summer day, you have felt the effects of power usage overload. By using a solar powered water fountain, rather than a conventionally powered fountain, you are doing your part to reduce the overall load on the local power grid without having to sacrifice the relaxing effects of a water fountain.
Solar Water Fountains Are Easily Transported
Solar fountains are entirely self contained. There is no need to connect them to external power or to trip over outdoor extension cords if you want to locate it farther away from the house. Transporting a solar fountain to a new location is much simpler than relocating a fountain that requires commercial power. Simply drain the fountain, move it to the desired location, and the move is complete. As a result of this flexibility, you can locate your solar fountain anywhere where the solar panel will catch sunlight. You need not limit your options to locations close to an electrical outlet. Solar fountain portability also makes moving them indoors as winter approaches a breeze.
Solar Water Fountains Need Not Be Expensive
Since the price of efficient solar panels has dropped, solar powered water fountains are now available at prices that are surprisingly affordable. You can find models starting at under $100 making a solar fountain a terrific choice for your first fountain.
Solar Fountains Are Adaptable
Most solar fountains are designed for outdoor use since that’s where sunlight can be found. However, they also make excellent indoor fountains if you are able to place them in a room with access to direct sunlight such as that found in sun rooms, under skylights, etc. Depending on your location, they can even be enjoyed well into the winter. Of course the amount of available sunlight will affect their performance. Combined with the portability of a solar fountain, it is possible to enjoy your water feature nearly year-round.
Today, there are a plenty of home lighting fixtures to choose from. Some most common types of lighting fixtures are discussed here. All types of ceiling fixtures provide excellent general room illumination. Pendants can be used to add more light to specific areas such as a kitchen table.
Chandeliers or pendants with 200-400 overall wattage provide abundant illumination for a dining room. The diameter of the fixture should be 12 inches less than the width of the table. Center the fixture over the table.
To prevent accidents, stairs should be lit top to bottom, with switches in both places. Ceiling fixtures or recessed lighting will offer the needed light for stairs. Use a ceiling mount fixture for general lighting in the foyer. For safety in hallways, use lighting fixtures every 8 to10 feet. Use increased wattage in areas where tasks are performed, in rooms with ceilings higher than 8 feet, and in rooms with dark-colored floors and walls.
Wall fixtures are used to provide illumination for a specific area such as a hallway or a bathroom vanity. While traditional wall fixtures with “arms” remain the most popular form of wall lighting, more contemporary wall sconces are gaining popularity, especially for hallway or accent lighting. Wall lighting can offer needed illumination levels to prevent accidents on stairs, especially when an overhead ceiling fixture is not feasible.
For reading in bed, use two matching wall mounted or pendant fixtures installed 30 inches above the top of the mattress.
Another type of lighting fixtures are the recessed lights. They are used for down lighting. specially the living areas look great with down lighting. You can use recessed in combination with other lights and you can install dimmer switches with them to create special effects for special occasions.
Recessed light fixtures can be used for concentrated down lighting. This effect is perfect for lighting a kitchen counter or bathroom vanity because it confines illumination to one specific area, making detailed tasks easier to perform.
Another advantage of recessed lights are, they can be used as accent lights also to highlight special features of a room like a painting or any art work. You can even make a room appear larger in size with recessed lights. Use them on light colored walls in small living room areas. This will create a contrast in the room thus making it look bigger and beautiful.

In the far North where killing frosts come early, October’s bright, blue weather brings an end to the gardening season. In the central and southern part of the north central area, where garden plants can be given the little temporary protection they need to keep them safe from Jack Frost, flowers and gardens may extend into November.
Many garden annuals enjoy a blossom revival during the cool, clear weather of early fall. Snapdragons, verbenas, stocks, cosmos, geraniums, asters and others do especially well in October. The weather is also favorable to petunias, sweet alyssum, lobelia, marigolds, bachelor buttons and those last roses of summer that have such high quality and exceptionally good color.
The garden chrysanthemum, however, is the reigning king over the autumn garden. Up to now they have commanded little attention other than casual admiration of their good; green foliage and promise of blooms. Now, they steal the show with abundant, bright flowers. The garden chrysanthemum is especially important to northern gardens because the season is so short and these plants put on a brilliant performance ” for a full two months at the end of the gardening year when most other garden plants are either through flowering or in a marked decline in this respect.
Protecting From Frost
In early fall light but damaging frosts usually occur at intervals of a week to ten days. Sometimes there may be two weeks between them. During these short frost periods, usually only overnight, it will be advantageous to give a little protection to plants that arc in bloom. Plants can be covered quickly and easily and blooms saved to be enjoyed for much longer periods in the fall. Almost anything that will afford a little protection to keep out frost can be used: newspaper, burlap, painter’s dropcloths, worn out bedsheets and curtains or draperies. Cardboard cartons also can be inverted over blossoming plants to protect them.
When frosts threaten, it is important to place protective coverings over plants by the middle of the afternoon or soon after. This prevents the loss of the heat of the day, and conserves the warmth of the earth, giving added protection if the night should prove to be a really cold one Doing the job earlier in the day in a leisurely way makes it much more pleasant than it might be.if done later in the evening. It is important that the coverings do not touch the tops of plants, because frost injury is likely to occur there.
Use stout stakes (1 inch x 1 inch), long enough so that they can be firmly pushed into the ground above the tops of the plants being protected like what i am doing with my sphagnum moss. Coverings should be draped over the sides so that the plants are completely enclosed down to the ground. I also do this with my sphagnum moss.
Obviously, it is impractical to try to cover the entire garden. Select areas where there are good blooms to keep color and life right up to freezing weather.
September is that glorious month in the South that heralds the approach of cooler weather. The days grow shorter and the nights grow cooler and both garden and gardener take a new lease on life. September might be dubbed appreciation month - a chance to observe and get full satisfaction from the efforts of all the garden projects. By watching the growth of certain plants and the lack of it in others, the wise gardener can easily plan for corrections next season.
Garden Sanitation - This all-important job should precede all other fall garden activities. Following the vacation period, many garden plants need to be groomed. Remove all dead foliage and old blooms from the plants or from the bed areas. This clean-up is necessary to eliminate diseases and remove hiding places that might harbor harmful insects.
With the approach of fall, insects will be searching for winter homes and places to lay their eggs. A wise gardener gets rid of such places of refuge for these pesky critters! Following the clean-up, dust the base of the plants with sulfur or a fungicide to insure the garden being “tucked in” for winter in a clean and healthful condition.
Compost Piles - Much of the garden litter removed in the fall makes good raw material for the compost pile. The leaves will soon begin to fall, and certainly these should be incorporated into compost as they will raise the acidity of the product for use on the garden.
Fall is the time when decomposition begins in the composting operation. By adding occasional layers of a balanced fertilizer into the composting material, one may improve the chemical content of this valuable humus material.
Remedial Pruning - This little task is always with us. As blooms are removed through the season, the direction of growth of plants like the lantana plant can easily be controlled. For instance, in cutting a rose and lantana plant the gardener has the choice of cutting the stem to an outside or inside bud. If the plant is open and the desired shape is to a closed center, then cut to an inside bud. The bud will be forced into growth, and the new growth will be toward the center of the plant.
To open up a plant cut above an outside bud. It is always wise to remove any damaged or diseased part of a plant during the growing season. Many plants grow so fast that they need a carefully followed pruning program to keep them in bounds. Regardless of the reason for pruning (there must be a reason), be conservative about removal of limbs from flowering plants and fruit trees from September on into the winter. As the rate of growth begins to slow down, the plants begin to store carbohydrates and this results in formation of the flower buds. Unless pruning is done very carefully, many flower buds can be easily destroyed. A good rule to remember is that most of the flower buds are formed on current season wood, and this wood should be saved to insure a heavy crop of bloom next spring.
